From creating childhood projects in his father’s workshop, to building his first piece of solid wood furniture in his teens, Denali Woodworks owner Jason Skagen has been a passionate woodworker throughout his life. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin with an engineering degree, Jason worked in food manufacturing for 14 years. During his spare time, he built custom furniture pieces for family and friends. Ultimately, demand for his business was great enough that he decided to pursue his passion and open Denali Woodworks.
Almost all of Jason's furniture pieces are custom, whether for residential or commercial projects. He also has pieces featured in several Minnesota showrooms. Even as his business has grown, he still prides himself on adding that personal, custom experience for each client. Jason works one on one with each customer to bring their design idea to life. His furniture celebrates the natural beauty of wood, and preserves it for generations to come.
Since Jason is an avid outdoorsman and frequent traveler to our State and National parks, Denali was a fitting name for the company. Additionally, it was also the name of Jason’s first shop dog.
We are not a car or electronic company who features a new model
each year. Our furniture and designs are built to last a lifetime. This means that Denali
Woodworks furniture will not end up in a landfill. It will last at least as long as it takes a new tree
to grow.
All of our hardwoods are harvested responsibly. This means that the
sawmills are not clear cutting forests. Rather, they are using storm-damaged trees or those from park and road projects. They also utilize sustainable practices to replant the trees that are selectively cut down. We also only use exotic woods from certified sustainable sources.
Most of our American hardwoods come from local Minnesota forests. Our most frequented sawmill is only 7 miles from our woodshop and obtains its logs locally. We manage all aspects of furniture production, from milling through finishing, in-house.
We strive to minimize landfill waste. Wood scraps are saved for smaller projects. Most of our remaining scrap wood and sawdust are given away to other artisans, horse farms, and local neighbors who heat their homes with wood. Finishing product waste is recycled locally.
